Description: Access to appropriate financing remains one of the most significant challenges facing geothermal project development in Africa. While geothermal energy offers reliable, low-emission, and locally available energy solutions, projects are often characterised by high upfront costs, long development timelines, resource uncertainty, and complex risk profiles. Strengthening the capacity of stakeholders to assess project viability and identify suitable financing pathways is therefore critical to accelerating geothermal deployment across the continent.
To address these challenges, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), under the framework of the Global Geothermal Alliance (GGA), is supporting the Africa Geothermal Association (AGA) in delivering a practical short course on financing geothermal projects in Africa. Organised on the margins of the African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo-C11), the workshop will focus on techno-economic analysis, project finance fundamentals, renewable energy funds, climate finance, and carbon market opportunities for geothermal development.
