Unlocking the value of LDES: The Role of Long-Duration Energy Storage in Power System Transformation

Date: 6 November2025

Organizer: IRENA

Description:  As the global energy landscape shifts toward high shares of variable renewable energy (VRE), ensuring a cost-efficient and reliable supply of electricity has become a critical issue. Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) can contribute to addressing this and is expected to play a central role in the integrated, decarbonised, and secure energy system of the future.

IRENA and LDES Council are introducing this series of webinars focus on the topic of LDES that aims to define and explore the value of LDES. The first in these series is on ‘The Role of Long-Duration Energy Storage in Power System Transformation’. The webinar will explore the growing importance of LDES as the global energy landscape transitions toward high shares of variable renewable energy (VRE). It will discuss how LDES technologies enable cost-efficient and reliable electricity supply, the scale and pace of global LDES deployment, and provide insights from selected markets.

Experts from regional system operators will share experiences and real-world case studies demonstrating the value of LDES. This webinar explores the need to consider long-duration energy storage, not just to manage variability, but to shape a flexible, secure, and carbon-free energy future.
