Electrons and Money: Tunisia

Publication date: 10 August 2026

Author: African Energy

Description: This report – a companion to Energy Prospects and Risks: Tunisia – examines regulatory dynamics, financial flows through the sector and the relationship of generation projects with transmission and interconnections.

As it looks to diversify away from over-reliance on imported electrons and gas molecules, Tunisia has the potential to become one of the most prospective markets for competitive renewable energy IPPs in Africa.

But it needs to invest more in its relatively well-developed transmission network in order to handle the shift from generating power in large gas-fired power plants built relatively close to existing load centres, to a more dispersed and distant fleet of renewable power plants.
