PV Development and Current Market Trends in Africa

Date & Time: 14 December 2021

Organizer: Solarbe

Description: Africa has abundant renewable energy resources. With recent substantial cost reductions, solar photovoltaic offers a rapid, cost-effective way to provide utility-scale electricity for the grid and modern energy services to the approximately 600 million Africans who lack electricity access.

In terms of global regions, north Africa has the lowest share of renewable energy in terms of overall energy consumption. In spite of this, north Africa boasts enormous renewable potential, particularly solar power. Furthermore, the acceptance of solar power across MENA is growing, in alignment with the increasingly affordable costs of the technology and systems to facilitate it. The technology behind PV modules is advancing, and so is battery storage, as the solar market matures.

The speech recently delivered by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the opening ceremony of the Eighth Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) is also significant and draws blueprints for the development of China-Africa relations by putting more efforts on solar and renewable development.
